- Name of the Fort:
- Base Village:
- How to Reach:
- Panhaleghar is the base village of the fort. We have to reach Lonere village to reach Panhaleghar, which is 5 km away. Lonere is situated at 8 km from Mangaon towards Mahad on Mumbai – Goa highway. It takes half an hour to reach the top from Buddhawadi in base village.
The most economical way is to travel in Diva-Madgaon passenger train at Diva (around 6 am). It reaches Mangaon around 10 am. We can see Mangad and then Panhaledurga. The same train can be boarded at Goregaon station (not to be confused with Goregaon on Mumbai western railway) at 5 pm.
- Panhaledurg fort is used to keep a watch on Raigad route. This fort is very small. One can see 3 water cisterns on top of the fort. Nothing else is present on top of the fort. Chatrpati Shivaji Maharaj made Raigad as the capital of Maratha kingdom, and built a chain of forts to strengthen it.
This included Mangad, Panhaledurga, Songad, Chambhargad and Lingana were amongst them. Panhaledurga is quite small, and was mainly used to keep watch on enemies reaching Raigad. The bastions and entrance are destroyed, with some remnants of ramparts. There are around 14 water tanks on the fort. It takes half an hour to see the fort.
